Document Koen (Document Park) is one of the most notorious and sought-after Japanese photobooks. This follow-up paperback was released a year after the original and features photographs from the first section of the book with additional text and diagrams. It was released as a D.I.Y. of some sorts for aspiring photo-voyeurs aiming to replicate the images seen in Document Park.
Kohei Yoshiyuki used infrared film to capture sexual nocturnal activities in the parks of Tokyo during the 70s. He not only photographed the participants, but also the voyeurs spying and those trying to involve themselves in the action. Document Koen explores the boundaries of privacy, an incresingly rare commodity. It is a brilliant piece of social documentation, catching perfectly the loneliness, sadness and desperation that so often accompany sexual or human relationships in a big, hard metropolis like Tokyo.
