SPBH Editions, 2018 First edition Softcover with fold-out poster dust jacket, 120 pages, 220 x 305 mm Condition: Very Good. One bumped corner, otherwise fine.
A book of text and image, My Birth interweaves photographs of artist Carmen Winant's mother giving birth to her three children with found images of other, anonymous, women undergoing the same bodily experience. As the pictorial narrative progresses, from labour through to delivery, the women's postures increasingly blend into one another, creating a collective body that strains and releases in unison. In addition to the photographic sequence, the book includes an original text by the artist exploring the shared, yet solitary, ownership of the experience of birth.
My Birth was published to coincide with Winant's installation of the same name presented as a part of MoMA's Being: New Photography 2018 exhibition; a collage taking over two facing walls featuring more than 2000 found images of women careening through the full, uncensored continuum of birth.
