A super scarce cult classic, The Butch Manual is an irreverent romp through one segment of gay culture: the Butch, or “Macho Man” of the early 1980s. The book takes a very amusing look at the so called "Gay Clone" of the era and offers facetious advice to queer men on adopting excessively masculine behavior, including movement, speech patterns, and appearance.
Originally published as a satire of homosexual social behavior — at a time where no one was publishing books by gay men and on the topic of gay life — it has now become a nostalgic trip to an era some call "the golden age of promiscuity", just before the devastating AIDS epidemic.
Clark Henley died of AIDS in 1988.
