14 days after 9/11, an exhibition opened in a previously vacant storefront in SoHo, 20 blocks from Ground Zero. Photographer Gilles Peress, Michael Shulan—who owned the building where the exhibit started—and two friends decided to hang pictures of the city by anybody and everybody who submitted them, more than 5000 photos by some 3000 photographers.

Here Is New York has by now amassed one of the largest photographic archives in world history devoted to a single event. The book presents 900 uncaptioned portraits of the city in crisis. Direct without being voyeuristic, these images reflect the duality of tragedy, how it can be both profoundly personal and universal. They capture not only grief, and shock, and courage, but an infernal kind of beauty.
