One Step Big Shot
Gus Van Sant

Published by Nazraeli Press, 2010

Hardcover, 72 pages, 210 x 275 mm. 52 color and duotone plates

First edition

One Step Big Shot investigates portraiture in the work of Gus Van Sant, one of cinema’s most influential directors. The title references a quick and direct act of picture making: the use of Polaroid cameras and films. In the hands of Van Sant, a 'big shot' was 'one step' in the production of his early films. Drawn from hundreds of Polaroid photographs, this book pivots on the act and artifact of portraiture. These portraits - including actors Patricia Arquette, Crispin Glover, Patricia Clarkson, Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Casey Affleck and others - exemplify Van Sant’s considerable talents, and also provoke a discussion about representation.

Published as an extension of the exhibit "One Step Big Shot: Portraits by Andy Warhol and Gus Van Sant" at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, University of Oregon (May 15 - September 5, 2010), the book opens with an insightful essay by the Museum's curator of American and regional art, Lawrence Fong.
