Maximilian Stejskal (1906-1991), an ethnologist and gymnastics teacher from Helsinki, conducted extensive studies on what he called “folk athletic” contests amongst Finland’s male rural population in the early 20th century. From 1929 to 1937 Stejskal collected information about these male strength competitions, which were hardly practiced anymore even then. During his field research he amassed a considerable collection of documentation, comprising travelogs, testimonies, sketches and 433 photographs he captured of actual farmers performing the traditional games. This book focuses on a small selection of those photographs.
