The World was a legendary nightclub in New York City, which operated from the mid-1980s to 1991 in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Run from a disused Jewish wedding hall, the World brought together like no other place people of different ethnicities and economic backgrounds; avant-garde club kids, drag queens, celebrities, and black and Puerto Rican locals, as well as the uptown crowd. Prince, Grace Jones, Keith Haring and Madonna were all regulars. The photographs in this book, all taken by photographer Stephan Lupino, capture brilliantly the essence of the era, the decadence and glamour, the subversive attitude and the sexual hedonism amidst the devastating AIDS epidemic.
